The Saving of our Local Airport in 1987

The history of Medina Municipal Airport would not be complete without telling of the efforts put forth by former Mayor Bill Lamb, Medina City Council and the Medina Chamber of Commerce. An article from Cityscape, (a City of Medina publication) from April, 1989 explains Lamb’s efforts to save our local airport. Prior to that time the airport was called Freedom Field. The changing of hands from Bill Freed to the City of Medina gave the airport new ownership and a new name, Medina Municipal Airport.

As the article says, Mayor Lamb’s rationale for the rescue is straightforward. “Industry generates revenue,” he explains “and industry needs transportation options. “The same reasoning led to the city’s purchase of Freedom Field in 1987. Instead of allowing the privately owned airport five miles east of the city to close, Lamb, city council and the chamber went to work. To raise approximately $2 million needed to buy and renovate the two-runway field, Medina combined grants from the federal Airport Improvement Program with federal, state and city funding. Renaming Medina Municipal Airport, the field now offers another convenient transportation option to local businesses.
